How to set up ticketing, take payments, check people in, and fix the problem you're stuck on — whether you're running an event or holding a ticket to one.

Getting started

Organizers

How do I create my first event?
Create an account, then go to your dashboard and click "Create event". The wizard walks through four steps — details, location & policies, ticket types, then review & publish. Each step validates on its own and your progress is saved automatically, so closing the tab or coming back later won't lose your work. Nothing is publicly visible until you hit Publish — you can save an event as a draft and come back to it any time.
What's the difference between a draft and a published event?
A draft is only visible to you and your team in the dashboard — buyers can't find it, and its URL 404s if someone guesses it. Publishing makes the event page live and shareable immediately. You can preview exactly what buyers will see, phone or desktop, from your dashboard before publishing — look for "Preview event page" on the overview.
Can I edit an event after publishing it?
Yes — name, description, cover image, venue, policies, and ticket types can all be changed after publishing from the event's page in your dashboard. Changing details doesn't notify existing ticket holders automatically; if something buyers need to know changes (time, venue), tell them directly, e.g. via a cancellation/refund email or your own channels.
Can I delete an event?
Only if it has no real order, ticket, payment, settlement, or payout history — this protects your own records and anyone who already bought a ticket. A draft or free test event with no real activity can be deleted permanently from its dashboard page. An event with real history can be archived instead, which hides it from your main list without deleting anything.

Ticket types & seating

Organizers

How do I set up different ticket types?
From your event's Tickets tab, add as many types as you need — General Admission, VIP, Early Bird, Student, or anything custom. Each type has its own price, quantity available, sale start/end window, and a max-per-order limit, so you can run early-bird pricing or cap how many one buyer can take.
Can I sell free tickets?
Yes — set a ticket type's price to $0. Free tickets skip payment entirely: the buyer gets their ticket immediately with no card details needed, and there's no fee at all, ever.
Can people pay cash at the door instead of online?
Yes — mark a ticket type as "Pay at the door" instead of online. The buyer reserves their spot and gets a ticket immediately, but it's flagged unpaid until staff collect cash or EFTPOS and mark it paid — either from the check-in scanner directly, or from your Orders list. Scanning an unpaid door ticket shows "payment due" instead of checking it in, so nobody gets in without paying.
How do I set up assigned seating?
Open your event's Seating tab and add a section — give it a name, a color, a price, a sales window, and a rows-by-seats grid (e.g. 8 rows of 12). Drag it into position and resize it on the canvas to roughly match your venue. Each section becomes its own ticket type automatically. Buyers click "Choose seats" on the event page and pick their exact seat from a live map before checking out — taken seats are shown greyed out in real time.
Can I resize a seating section after creating it?
Yes, as long as no seat in it has sold yet — resizing regenerates the whole seat grid, which would break existing tickets if any had sold. Once a section has a sale, add a new section instead of resizing.
A ticket type's quantity looks locked — why can't I change it?
Two reasons this happens: you're trying to set it lower than tickets already sold or reserved (can't undersell what's already gone out), or it's a seated ticket type — those are resized from the Seating tab's grid controls instead, so the seat count and ticket count never drift apart.

Payments & fees

Organizers

Why can't I publish or sell paid tickets yet?
Paid ticket sales need a connected Stripe account — money for your event goes directly into your own account, never through Million Tickets. Go to Settings → Stripe account and connect or create one; it takes a few minutes of Stripe's own guided setup. Free events and pay-at-the-door tickets don't need this at all.
How much does it cost to sell tickets?
$0.80 per ticket + payment processing, only on tickets you actually sell — nothing upfront, no subscription. Free events and free tickets cost nothing at all. Full breakdown on the pricing page.
When do I actually get paid?
Stripe pays out to your own connected bank account on the payout schedule you set up with them (usually a rolling schedule after each sale) — Million Tickets never holds your money. Check your Stripe Dashboard directly for exact payout timing and status.
How do refunds work?
Process a refund from the order in your dashboard — full or partial. It goes back to the buyer's card through Stripe directly. Your refund policy (shown to buyers before they purchase) is something you set per event under Location & Policies.
Can I offer discount codes?
Yes, from Promo Codes in your dashboard — percentage or fixed-dollar-off, event-scoped, with an optional maximum number of uses. Buyers enter a code at checkout and see the discount applied before paying.

Check-in & door staff

Organizers

How does check-in work on the day?
Open the check-in scanner from your dashboard on any phone — it uses the camera directly through the browser, nothing to install. A USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner gun also works, plug-and-scan. Each ticket can only be checked in once; a second scan is flagged immediately, and simultaneous scans from multiple devices are handled safely so nobody gets double-counted.
Does check-in need a live account for every door staff member?
No — from Team → Door scan links, generate a shareable link for a specific event and send it to whoever's on the door. They open it on any phone and start scanning immediately, no Million Tickets account or login needed. Each link only works for the one event it was created for, and you can revoke it any time — a revoked link stops working instantly, even mid-event.
Do I need internet at the door?
Yes — check-in verifies each scan against your event's live data, so it needs a working connection. There's no offline queueing yet, which is worth planning around for a venue with unreliable signal or Wi-Fi.
What happens if a ticket type is pay-at-the-door and someone hasn't paid?
Scanning it shows "payment due" instead of checking the attendee in. Mark it paid right from that screen (or from Orders) once you've collected cash or EFTPOS, then scan again to check them in.

Team & access

Organizers

How do I add someone to my team?
From Team in your dashboard, invite them by email and set their role — a manager can manage events, tickets, and payments; staff access is limited to check-in and attendee tools only, so you can hand off door duty without handing over your whole account.
What's the difference between a team member and a door scan link?
A team member needs a Million Tickets account and gets ongoing access based on their role. A door scan link needs no account at all and only works for scanning one specific event — the right choice for a one-off helper or volunteer who just needs to scan tickets for a single night.

Your event page & branding

Organizers

Can I customize how my event page looks?
Your event page automatically themes itself by category, shows your cover image full-bleed, a live countdown, and an "about the organizer" section if you fill one in. Upload your organization's logo from Settings → Branding — it shows next to your name on every event page.
Does my event description support formatting?
Yes — a light set of Markdown: **bold**, *italic*, [links](https://example.com), and bullet lists. Plain text works fine too if you don't need formatting.
Can I use my own domain instead of milliontickets.co.nz?
Yes, from Settings → Custom domain — a guided flow walks through adding your domain, the DNS records to add at your registrar, verification, and confirmation once it's live. This doesn't remove Million Tickets branding from the page, just the URL.
My event's cover image looks stretched or cropped oddly — why?
Every uploaded cover image is automatically resized to a consistent shape, smart-cropped around the most important part of the photo. If a crop looks wrong, try a photo closer to a 16:9 landscape shape to begin with — that gives the auto-crop the most to work with.

For ticket buyers

Buyers

Do I need an account to buy a ticket?
No — checkout works as a guest by default. Enter your name and email, pay, and you're done. Your confirmation email includes a permanent link back to your tickets, so there's nothing to lose access to. You can also look up your tickets by email any time.
Where do I find my ticket?
Check your email — the confirmation includes a link to view every ticket in your order, plus a QR code and PDF download for each one. That link works any time, no login needed; bookmark it or keep the email.
What do I show at the door?
The QR code from your ticket email or ticket page, on your phone screen (or the downloadable PDF, printed or on-screen). Staff scan it once to check you in — it only works once, so it can't be reused or shared after you've entered.
I selected the wrong seat — can I change it?
Seats are locked in once your order is placed. Contact the event organizer directly (their event page has their name — reach out through your usual channels) to see if they can help before the event.
Can I get a refund?
Refund policies are set by each organizer and shown on the event page before you buy. If you need one, contact the organizer directly — they process refunds from their own dashboard.
The event I bought tickets for was cancelled — what happens?
You're emailed automatically as soon as the organizer cancels. They arrange refunds for any paid orders from their dashboard.

Trust & security

Everyone

Do you store my card details?
No. All payment details are handled directly by Stripe, which is PCI-DSS certified — Million Tickets never receives or stores raw card data.
Where is my data hosted?
On Supabase (Postgres), hosted in Sydney — close to New Zealand for fast, reliable performance.
Can someone reuse or screenshot my ticket's QR code to get in twice?
No — each QR code is checked against live event data at the door, and the very first successful scan permanently marks that ticket used. A second scan of the same code (screenshot, forwarded, printed twice) is flagged immediately as already checked in.

Promoting your event

Organizers

How do I share my event?
Every published event gets its own shareable URL immediately — copy it from your dashboard or the event page itself and share it anywhere: social media, a group chat, email, a poster QR code. There's no public event directory to opt into or out of; a link is the only way people find your event unless you share it.
How can I see how my event is selling?
Your event's Sales/analytics tab shows live numbers — tickets sold, revenue, remaining capacity, orders over time, and check-in rate once the event's underway — plus a searchable, exportable attendee list.

Troubleshooting

Everyone

A buyer says checkout failed or their card was declined
That's between the buyer and their card issuer/bank — Stripe declines a charge before any money moves, so nothing was taken and no ticket was issued. Ask them to try a different card, or check with their bank if it keeps happening.
I started checking out but didn't finish — is my spot still reserved?
Tickets are held for a short window while you complete payment (around 15 minutes). If checkout isn't finished in that time, the hold releases automatically and those tickets become available to other buyers again — just start checkout again if you still want them.
A scanned ticket shows "invalid" or "wrong event"
This means the QR code doesn't match a real ticket for the event currently open in the scanner — usually someone showing a ticket for a different event, an old/cancelled order, or a corrupted screenshot. Ask them to pull up their actual confirmation email or ticket page and scan directly from there.
My event isn't showing up when I search for it
There's no public event directory or search — events are link-first by design. Anyone visiting needs the direct link you share, not a search on the site.
I can't find something covered here
Check the full FAQ — between the two, most common questions are covered. If you're trying to reach an event organizer specifically about an order or refund, they're your fastest path; Million Tickets doesn't process refunds or issue tickets on an organizer's behalf.

Didn't find what you needed?

Double-check the FAQ — or create an account and dive in, most things make more sense once you're looking at your own dashboard.
